Sports hub promoters challenged on Maori outreach

Mana leader Hone Harawira has expressed sympathy to the aims of a protest that stopped work on Kaitaia's Te Hiku sports hub yesterday.
A group led by Wikatana Popata from Te Paatu says the site is near significant sites including Te Ahu, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, but there had been no proper consultation with tangata whenua.
Mr Harawira says the sports hub is a good idea but it seems driven by Pakeha imperatives without Maori sports people in mind.
"They don't have any meaningful engagement with rugby league at all in their Te Hiku sports hub and of course rugby league in my territory is 99 percent Maori so to hear they are not engaging with the tangata whenua either suggests they need to have a good hard look at themselves and what they are hoping to achieve," he says.
