Writing on wall for Auckland port move
The chair of Auckland Council's planning committee says the writing is on the wall to relocate Port of Auckland, but there is a lot of further work needed before a decision can be made.
The council today received the recommendations of the Port Future Study Consensus Working Group, which included mana whenua, community and business members advised by technical experts.
Chris Darby says the planning committee decided to continue investigations into alternative port locations.
The process would include advocating central government investigate an upper North Island port strategy.
The working group looked at moving the port to Manukau Harbour or the Firth of Thames, but there may be other options.
Ngati Whatua Orakei is among those pushing for the port to move.
Mr Darby says the council is also considering staged delivery of additional waterfront public space and new ferry infrastructure.
