Hapu researchers tackle climate change
Researchers and whanau involved in the Deep South Science Challenge meet in Wellington today to compare notes and assess progress in developing Maori responses to climate change.
The challenge is one of 11 set up by the government, and NIWA scientist Darren Ngaru King says projects in the vision matauranga stream are helping to identify the particular risks Maori communities may face with climate change.
Projects include working with land trusts on what to do about sea level rise, coastal erosion and extreme weather events; looking at the economic implications of climate change on land use decisions; and revitalising traditional indicators to forecast local weather and climate conditions.
He says numerous hapu and iwi are producing their own environmental plan, many of which recognise climate change as a priority and detail their responses.
