Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson has ticked off another two milestones as parliament clears the decks for the election.
Yesterday Ngati Rangi initialled its deed of settlement, which it will seek to ratify in the next few months.
The iwi, whose rohe covers the western and southern foot of Mount Ruapehu, will get financial and commercial redress of $17 million, including the purchase and lease back of the Waiouru and Ohakune police stations and the transfer of land under the Karioio Forest.
It is also looking at defense land for housing purposes.
Cultural redress includes some land, recognition of its interests in several sites and waterways, and a new body to oversee the Whangaehu River catchment.
It was also a day of celebration for Ngati Hei, which signed a deed of settlement for its claims to the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula.
It will get an $8.5 million package, including the right to buy 85 percent of Whenuakite Station.
