Forest buyers starving sawmills

New Zealand First’s Whangarei candidate is attacking a firm owned by the Chinese Government which is buying up forests in Northland.
Shane Jones says China Forest Products is harvesting a forest it bought at Poutu on the Kaipara Harbour before the trees are mature.
It also has the rights to the forests on the Waitangi estate in the Bay of Islands, which it is refusing to make available to local sawmills.
"And I’m going to continue to be a critic of the Chinese government’s firm unless they make those trees available for the timber processors, for the sawmillers, because that’s where our kaimahi, from Ngapuhi nui tonu in many cases, are working. I thoroughly understand Chinese foreign policy having been an ambassador and their policy is China first. Well I’m a politician from New Zealand First and the two, in this case, are incompatible," Mr Jones says.
