Leadership decision clears way to resolve wardens’ status
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell has welcomed the end of a row over who leads the New Zealand Maori Council.
The High Court has declared former High Court judge Sir Edward Taihakurei Durie the chair, putting to an end a power bid by former co-chair and Mataatua District Maori Council chair Maanu Paul.
Mr Flavell says the row has damaged the council's profile and created uncertainty.
"I've had a fair bit to do with Taihakurei in the recent past in trying to address issues about the Maori wardens and their association with the New Zealand Maori Council and it hasn't been helped by people being in court and disputes about who is the leader and it has hamstrung us in a sense because we have had to wait for court actions and appeals and so on, so now it has been determined, great, we can get on with it," he says.
