Tauranga Moana iwi suspend protest

Tauranga iwi are suspending protest action after Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson promised not to sign a settlement with Hauraki Collective until issues in dispute are resolved.
Tauranga Moana iwi have objected to a Hauraki representative sitting on a 10-member co-management board to over the Tauranga Harbour catchment.
Ngai Te Rangi Iwi chair Charlie Tawhiao says both Minister Finlayson and Minister of Maori Development Te Ururoa Flavell have heard the concerns of Tauranga iwi after initially trying to push through the Hauraki settlement against the wishes of Tauranga iwi and residents.
He says Ngai Te Rangi wants a tikanga or culturally-driven process to seek to resolve the issues with individual Hauraki iwi, and work is now being done on setting up such a process, with support from the Ministry for Maori Development.
Hauraki has said the Waitangi Tribunal has found elements of the confederation did have interest in Tauranga Moana, and the properties included in the settlement had been agreed to by Tauranga Moana leaders several years ago.
