Hope for homeless

The homeless or tangata kore kainga, living rough in Manurewa led the Hikoi of Hope in Manurewa over the weekend.
The hikoi was organised to raise the issue of homelessness after one of their community passed away this month.
The death of rough sleeper Haami Manahi on the steps of a Methodist Church prompted community leaders and locals to open their eyes to poverty in Manurewa.
Local Councillor Rangi McLean says tangata kore kainga were apprehensive about being centre of attention but were finally encouraged to lead the hikoi.
" At first they were apprehensive and didn't want to draw attention to themselves. We asked them to front the hikoi and they agreed. They did an excellent job" says Rangi Mclean.
