Kelvin Davis announces affordable housing authority

The Labour Party will establish a Maori Housing Unit that will sit within a new 'Affordable Housing Authority.'
MP for Te Tai Tokerau Kelvin Davis made the announcement at the campaign launch for the Labour Party Maori candidates at Nga Whare Waatea Marae yesterday.
Party faithfuls were told Labour will increase state housing stock by at least 1000 per month.
Kelvin Davis says Labour's policy is about delivering real solutions by targeting the needs of whanau.
"We're going to establish a Maori housing unit that is within our affordable housing authority that Labour's going to establish because we want to make sure that housing policies actually target the needs of Maori," he says.
Kelvin Davis says Labour will also amend the Kainga Whenua Loans Scheme to make it more accessible.
The Kainga Whenua Loans Scheme is an initiative between the Kiwi Bank and Housing New Zealand but Kelvin Davis says it's just not working.
"The trouble is it's so complicated and convoluted that nobody or barely anybody has been able to take that up. We're going to sort that out. We're going to enable iwi to access mortgages collectively to build on iwi land, on whanau land. We're going to work so that Maori can own homes with shared equity through rent to buy," he says.
