Hikoi commemorates lives lost on the War Rd
A hikoi commemorating the 154th anniversary of the Land Wars in Manukau and Waikato is about to reach Mangatangi today.
Hikoi organiser Pania Newton says monuments were established along Great South Road dubbed the 'War-Road' during and after the 1863 land wars and this hikoi stopped to honour tupuna who fought and lost their lives in this battle, including Maori who fought for the colonial militia.
" We've managed to put together these little plaques and we've erected them at several monuments with whakatauki about the war at Rangiaowhia and the efforts of our tupuna and our own Waikato soldiers
Pania Newton says kaumatua and tamariki are marching to commemorate a war that's being described by historians as the most significant war in New Zealand's history.
