Ngati Tuwharetoa Settlement


Ngati Tuwharetoa signed its Deed of Settlement with the Crown in Taupo last weekend but not all of the tribe is happy with the agreement.
Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Chris Finlayson delivered the Crown apology and the settlement which includes the return of 34 blocks of Crown-owned land and reserves, the Huka Falls, Tauhara Geothermal Spring, and part of the Tongariro National Trout Centre and $25 million as part of its commercial redress Tuwharetoa would purchase part of Karioi Forest and Taurewa Station.
But Te Matai Trust, which represents some hapu members of Tutemohuta, has lodged an injunction to stop the deed of settlement proceeding through Parliament.
Te Matai Trust representative Nigel Baker says they want the Pakaututu block, which was confiscated by the Crown, returned to them.
Ngati Tuwharetoa says its happy to discuss the issue with the Trust.
Te Matai Trust's, injunction bid is expected to be heard tomorrow in the High Court in Wellington.
