Standards rethink needed says principals president.
Principals Federation president Whetu Cormick hopes new Education Minister Nikki Kaye will rethink the Government’s national standards policy.
He says Ms Kaye is using words like partnership and wanting to work with the sector, but he doesn’t believe schools and kura are funded sufficiently to offer the best education, especially for Maori.
They are also saddled with a regime of standards-based testing which stifle the innovation and creativity she says she wants to see.
"Standardisation, national standards progressions are not going to shorten the brown tail for our Maori tamariki. What will do is a curriculum learning within our own communities, our own iwi and our own areas that is going to enable young people to fly and be who they are," says Whetu Cormick.
