Whanau measured with impact tool

The head of strategy and innovation at social service provider Waipareira Trust says a new tool for measuring the impact of programmes will make providers accountable to those they are meant to help.
The Social Return on Investment methodology was showcased at parliament this week, using the example of Waipareira’s Tai Tamariki programme for 10 to 13 year olds,
By measuring what matters to whanau, Waipareira was able to show it was generating $1.80 in value for every $1 spent.
Ms Tamihere says it will help Maori providers who often feel frustrated because conventional accountability frameworks don’t show what they achieve for whanau.
"It makes us as Maori providers accountable to our own people because it makes us measure the change that's important for our people, not what we as providers think, not what the funders think they want. It becomes a tool for our board of trustees to report back every year on did they make the change that was important for our people," says says.
Ms Tamihere says Social Return on Investment means providers can show funders where they are getting more than they are paying for.
