Red alert shows problems still remain
Ikaroa Rawhiti MP Meka Whaitiri says a damning Treasury rating for the proposed Maori Land Services shows the Maori Development Minister is out of his depth and can’t get the resources he needs to make his Maori land law reform work.
Treasury’s latest Major Projects Performance puts the service in the red category, meaning there are major issues with project definition, schedule, budget, quality and/or the delivery of benefits.
Ms Whaitiri says Mr Flavell has had the report for three months, but he doesn’t seem to have done anything to fix the problem.
"It means he can't get the resources he believes he can from Cabinet, because obviously Treasury is one of the key advisors to the Cabinet. Remember we are talking about a brand new service which is why he has removed some of the services from the Maori Land Court. Treasury has come back and said 'you're out of scope, you haven't done the basics around managing risk, no clear targets, we haven't got enough information from you, so we've got no choice but to sticker you as a red alert,'" she says.
Ms Whaitiri says public meetings with landowners in her electorate show there is still confusion and uncertainty about the reforms.
