A Nelson kuia says giving the highest level of legal protection to Nelson’s Waikoropupu Springs will give the puna back its mana.
A special tribunal will hear an application by Ngati Tama for a water conservation order for the springs, which contain the clearest water measured anywhere in the world.
Ngati Tama and Manawhenua ki Mohua trustee Margie Ward-Holmes Little says the spring has always been revered as a special place.
She says the councils which control its use need to be told that it is not an unlimited resource.
"The councils will need to adjust and be reflective of the decisions they have made in the past and the ones they make in the future for the water in Mohua, in Golden Bay," Mrs Little says.
