Aim not just nuclear free but independent

It's 30 years since New Zealand passed its nuclear free legislation and Mana leader Hone Harawira says it's a reminder of the work done for many years by Maori, Pakeha and Pasifika.
Mr Harawira's wife Hilda Halkyard-Harawira chaired the Pacific people's Anti-nuclear Action Committee and they had been to a dinner on the Greepeace ship Rainbow Warrior just hours before it was blown up by French agents.
He says the protests tapped a nerve with many councils around the country declaring themselves nuclear free.
"The pressure back then from Maori was let's not just be nuclear free. We want the Pacific to be nuclear free and independent. We want to be free of those connecrtions to people like America who are choking us and strangling us," he says.
Mr Harawira says it's important New Zealand children are reminded of the nuclear free struggle and that the best world is a peaceful world.
