Groups line up for health claim
The Waitangi Tribunal says about 140 claimant groups have sought to participate in its inquiry into health services and health outcomes.
The Wai 2575 claim will look into contemporary breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi in health services and health outcomes for Maori.
After an initial judicial conference at Pipitea Marae in Wellington last month, the parties and the crown have been directed to hold roundtable discussions over the next three months to further refine the scope, priorities and process for the inquiry and file bibliographies of available research.
The crown has also been directed to file any Maori health documentation held by the Ministry for Health.
The tribunal won’t consider historical health-related grievances it has already heard or which have been settled with the crown, or health-related grievances that have been consolidated into other district or kaupapa inquiries.
It can consider any contemporary grievances continuing or arising on or after 21 September 1992, and in areas where there have been historical settlements.
