Northland Housing Forum sets pace on social housing
One of the country’s longest-running social housing networks is meeting in Moerewa tomorrow to share experiences and look at the challenges ahead.
The Northland Housing Forum has been holding similar hui since 2005 bringing together trusts, whanau, Maori and community groups with an interest in building and repairing homes.
Convenor Tim Howard says it will look at some of the work around Moerewa insulating and renovating older housing stock to make it more suitable for the needs of young families and kaumatua.
People in Te Taitokerau aren’t waiting for the government and they don’t accept the government’s view of state housing as social housing.
"Social housing involves a whole lot of practical support for some whanau, to work alongside them and achieve their goals. State housing steps right away from that level of support. the number of state houses is dropping and they are managed with hard nose rent management. There needs to be a whole lot of other things built into Housing New Zealand before they can be called truly social housing," Mr Howard says.
The Northland Housing Forum hui is at Te Punawai Centre in Moerewa starting at 9.30am Wednesday.
