Fast pace for Northern War commemoration

Ngati Hine intends to mark the first New Zealand Wars commemoration day with a multisport event that takes in all the battle sites of the Northern War.
Runanga chair Waihoroi Shortland says the Erima Challenge would probably take about five hours, starting at Russell where the flagpole was chopped down by Hone Heke.
Competitors will run, swim, canoe, cycle, and then finish with a run from Kawakawa to Ruapekapeka.
"It took a whole year to get around all these sites where we decided to have a scrap with the Brits. So it's important to go to every place those battles took place. What better way then to send people who are fitness warriors, people of some capacity around all of the sites," says Waihoroi Shortland.
The commemoration day is on October 28.
