Benefit sanctions attack on wahine
Greens’ Maori and human rights spokesperson Marama Davidson has endorsed an Auckland Action Against Poverty protest against Work and Income’s policy against women who won’t or can’t reveal the name of their child’s father.
More than half the women whose benefits are cut are wahine Maori.
Ms Davidson says the Greens have long opposed the policy because it seems designed to demonise and dehumanise women.
"It potentially can put women in dangerous positions by having to reveal identities, particularly if they have come out of any sort of abusive relationship. We simply don't need them and we all, I believe, have a collective responsibility to continue to stand against these sorts of narratives that dehumanise our whanau," she says.
