Maori trade training success celebrated
Maori and Pacific Trade Training Auckland will today show its new minister Paul Goldsmith the difference its scholarships are making to the lives of its trainees.
Trustee Sam Sefuiva says the trust started on a modest scale in 2015 with about 570 trainees, and has doubled that each year.
Auckland has the largest number of potential trainees, and the trust works with three polytechnics to get trainees ready to play their part in tacking the region’s challenges.
It’s building on history.
"From the 1950s to the 1970s, the Maori trade training scheme was highly successful and all we are doing is bringing the past into the future and giving the opportunity to many of our rangatahi and also for many older ones who want to reskill themselves, to go into the marketplace," Mr Sefuiva says.
Picking up skills and a job brings benefits not just for trainees but their wider whanau as the importance of education is confirmed.
