Libraries review Maori role
Maori librarians are looking for ways to help Maori, especially those learning te reo.
The National Maori Librarians Association, Te Roopu Whakahau, is holding its three day hui a tau in Rotorua this week.
Organiser Haki Tahana says as a spin off from the partnership agreement between Rotorua Lakes Council and Te Arawa, libraries in the area have looked closely at how they interact with Maori communities.
Libraries hold a wealth of knowledge including matauranga Maori but in needs to be presented in ways that are relevant to local communities.
A 2012 research paper, Kaupapa Maori in New Zealand public libraries, identified a need for libraries to incorporate biculturalism into library strategies and establish partnerships with iwi and hapu, as well as a need to support staff in training.
