A Taranaki negotiator says a couple who did a nude photo-shoot on the summit of Mount Taranaki were disrespecting the culture and the maunga.
25-year-old Jaylene Cook, a 25-year-old Kiwi based in the Gold Coast who has appeared in the Mexican edition of Playboy, posted the picture on her Instagram account after climbing the mountain with her photographer boyfriend.
Te Kahui o Taranaki Iwi Trust, General Manager Wharehoka Wano says it upset some Taranaki iwi who are negotiating a settlement for the mountain,
He says it shows the importance of continued education so people understand the Maori position.
"We will continue to voice and try to educate non-Maori about the importance and relevance of that mounga being a tupuna, an ancestor rather than just a hill with a few rocks. It really creates a lot of turmoil in our heart and soul when we see that sort of behaviour," Mr Wano says.
