Ruben the Road Safety Bear looking out for tamariki

Waikato Regional Council hopes a new matariki-themed book will help keep tamariki safe on the roads.
Ruben’s Matariki Adventure was written by the council's transport projects administrator, Jenny Davis, with a te reo Maori version penned by Waikato Tainui scholar Tom Roa.
It features Ruben the Road Safety Bear, the mascot for the council’s young road user safety programme.
Last year Ruben delivered 383 road safety lessons to almost 20,000 young pupils throughout the Waikato.
Ms Davis says during last week's launch at Ngaruawahia, Ruben urged tamariki to wear bright clothing so other road users can see them, stop, look, listen and link before crossing the road; look out for sneaky driveways; and wear a correctly fitting helmet when riding bikes or scooters.
Ruben’s website (www.ruben.govt.nz) features his key safety messages, activities for children, as well as helpful links and information for teachers, parents and caregivers.
