Moana celebrates sustainability of WWF team up
A partnership between Maori-owned fishing company Moana and environmental organisation WWF-New Zealand is being credited with making the seafood industry more environmentally responsible.
Moana chief executive Carl Carrington says Moana is a progressive company with strong values, and working with WWF helps identify the changes it needs to make.
Since the partnership began three years ago, 100 per cent of Moana’s contracted trawl and long-line fishers nationwide have been trained in seabird-safe fishing practices through the Seabird Smart programme.
It has worked with Sanford to reduce the threat to Maui dolphins.
The company has improved transparency through electronic monitoring, gained Aquaculture Stewardship Council certification for its paua farming operation, and reduced water and energy consumption and waste in its land-based facilities.
The Partnership is scheduled to run until mid 2020.
