Peace call for Maori Council

The New Zealand Maori Council has called on former co-chair Maanu Paul to withdraw legal action against it to enter into a peace process.
Mr Paul has a judicial review due to be heard in July about last year’s election when retired High Court judge Sir Taihakurei Durie was voted in as the sole chair.
The council also also faces a challenge from Waipareira head John Tamihere about the council’s refusal to accept the validity of his election
Sir Taihakurei says Mr Paul and his fellow Mataatua members boycotted Saturday’s board meeting in Wellington, as did supporters in Heretaunga, but the other regions turned up and called for unity.
He says the council also quizzed the Electoral Commission on its strategies to increase Maori participation in September’s general election, and it heard from the Green, Labour and National parties on their Maori policies.
