BOP Council Maori vacancy filled
Matemoana McDonald has been sworn in as the Mauao Maori councillor on the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.
Ms McDonald, who has been the council’s senior Maori policy advisor for the past three years, won 506 votes in a by-election to fill the seat vacated by the death of Awanuiarangi Black in November.
There were just 1608 votes, a 16 percent turn out rate, with runner up Carlton Bidois more than 100 votes behind.
At Thursday’s council meeting council Ms McDonald was appointed to the council’s Komiti Maori and to Te Awanui Tauranga Harbour Advisory Group.
