Whanganui memorial reveals story

A story of a Maori solider in World War I has inspired a documentary that will preview at next Month’s Doc Edge international documentary festival.
Set in Stone director Kevin Double says the story of Whanganui soldier Herewini Whakarua had been almost forgotten, despite him being immortalized on stone in a statue in the town’s Pakaitore Gardens.
The film tracks how the story was recovered when the community came together to restore the monument.
He says the reconstruction of Herewini’s monument united a group of diverse people – Maori and Pakeha, German and English.
Set in Stone has its world premiere in Wellington on May 16 and its first screening in Auckland on May 31.
