Point England development seen as treaty settlement

Auckland iwi Ngati Paoa says the ability to develop housing on Point England Reserve is a critical part of its treaty settlement.
Negotiator Hauauru Rawiri has welcomed parliament's local government and environment committee reporting back the Point England Development Enabling Bill without change.
Labour MPs on the committee issued a minority report on the bill opposing the sale of public open space for housing, and proposing the tribe instead be offered nearby land held by the Tamaki Regeneration company.
Even though the deal is a commercial arrangement with Environment and Building and Minister Nick Smith, Mr Rawiri sees it as something more.
"For Ngati Paoa this development is treaty redress. We have stated that from the beginning. Part of the ratification process is to go back to our iwi and communicate with them not only the development around Point England but the whole redress for Ngati Paoa," Mr Rawiri says.
He hopes the bill can get through before the election, and he's also keen to conclude the Ngati Paoa deed of settlement.
