Time to end gang ban

Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox says it's time to end the ban on gang members volunteering in prisons.
The ban was imposed by former minister Judith Collins after it was revealed that Nga Rauru kaumatua Ngapari Nui, a long time Black Power member, was working in Whanganui Prison.
Ms Fox says it was a policy made on the fly.
It only seems to have been applied to Mr Nui, who had been the first call when police or corrections wanted to calm down volatile situations.
"These are the ones who can turn them around, ones who have had life experience, the ones that understand them and if they are doing good work and helping rehabilitate and change the way some of these guys who are incarcerated think about the world, that cannot be a bad thing," Ms Fox says.
The Waitangi Tribunal's report on the crown's response to Maori reoffending shows how Corrections needs to rethink the way it works.
