State care horror stories demand inquiry

Mana leader Hone Harawira says the Government is being hypocritical in launching the Ministry for Vulnerable Children while refusing to hold an inquiry into the abuse of children in state care.
He says 100,000 kids have been taken into state care since 1950, more than half of them Maori.
The horror stories revealed from some of those former state wards on The Hui television programme at the weekend are just the tip of an iceberg.
He says those who try to complain say they first have to get over the shame and embarrassment, and then find it hard it is to get somebody to listen and respond.
Maori MPs are discussing a cross-party call for action, but the Maori affairs select committee is resisting pressure to hold its own inquiry because a majority of members feel it is important that only a full government-sanctioned inquiry is appropriate.
