Hundertwasser gallery great opportunity for Maori artists

The Prime Minister has endorsed Whangarei’s efforts to create the Hundertwasser Art Centre and Wairau Maori Art Gallery.
After meeting the project team and Wairau gallery board chair Elizabeth Ellis, Bill English said he was impressed by the opportunity it would present to Maori artists throughout New Zealand.
He says his experience helping to set up the Eastern Southland Gallery in Gore had shown him the ability of such galleries to draw visitors away from the main centres.
The government has so far committed $4 million to the project, which is trying to confirm all its funding by the end of June.
