Papakainga plan for Nga Hau e Wha Marae


Maori Development and Whanau Ora Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says he wants to encourage more collaborations like a new marae-led social housing development in Christchurch.
Nga Hau e Wha National Marae, Housing New Zealand, Rata Foundation and the Maori Housing Network led by Te Puni Kokiri are working on the $1.5 million project to build six three-bedroom homes on the marae reservation as part of a 17 home papakainga.
An additional two homes are expected to be built in the next five years.
Mr Flavell says the whanau and individuals who will live in the homes will be given wrap around support to empower themselves to move in a more positive direction.
These include support for Maori mothers and mums-to-be, a suite of services through Whanau Ora Navigators, budget services, youth services and an on site social worker.
Mr Flavell made the announcement today at the Unleash The Maui Summit in Christchurch's Lincoln Event Centre in Christchurch, which is looking at innovative, creative and sustainable solutions for whenua Maori.
