Horizons welcomes Whanganui River treaty settlement

Horizons regional councillors have welcomed the passing of Te Awa Tupua Bill, enacting the Whanganui River treaty settlement.
In a first for the country, the legislation acknowledges a river as its own legal identity.
Councilor Nicola Patrick says maintaining the health and wellbeing of the Whanganui River is key to the settlement.
It establishes mechanisms for multiple parties in the catchment including tangata whenua, councils, farmers, recreation and tourism to work together to produce a whole of river strategy.
