King’s endorsement a game changer
Maori Party president Tukoroirangi Morgan says getting the endorsement of King Tuheitia for Rahui Papa to stand as the party’s Hauraki Waikato candidate in September’s election is a game changer.
Both Mr Morgan and Mr Papa are senior advisors to the king, and despite Mr Morgan’s protestations when elected party president that he would keep the roles separate, he has brought the king into a full on battle with the opposition Labour Party.
He says the seat held by Nanaia Mahuta Mahuta, since she won it from him in 1999, is winnable.
"There are marae across Tainui that will rally to the call of the King. It's not about party politics, this is about a movement of the people. A movement where people want to chase the dream of mana Maori motuhake. The ability for Maori to shape their own destiny and not under the skirt of a mainstream Pakeha run party," says Maori Party president Tukoroirangi Morgan.
