Haka fraternity mourns Te Makariini Temara

The loss of Tuhoe kaumatua Te Makariini Temara in Whakatane yesterday morning has cast a shadow over the opening of Te Matatini, as roopu paid tribute to a significant contributor to Maori arts and te reo Maori.
He was 58.
Mr Temara led his Ruatahuna Kakahu Mauku into the top six at Te Matatini a decade ago.
He was a lecturer and cultural advisor at Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi.
Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell says Mr Temara had a wealth of knowledge about te reo Maori and tikanga, and a presence that made people gravitate towards him.
He is survived by his wife Rose, children and grandchildren.
