Pompey a master of the microphone

The man who wouldn’t give the microphone back.
That’s how singer Dennis Marsh remembers musician, singer and dynamic frontman Toko Pompey, who died yesterday.
Fellow entertainers as well as iwi have been making their way to Mangatangi Marae just south of the Hunua Ranges, where the Ngati Tamaoho kaumatua guarded the paepae.
Mr Marsh says the Mr Pompey was an entertainer through and through, and one of the greatest saxophone players he has shared a stage with.
"Give him a microphone in any situation and he wouldn't give it back. And wehn he got up to do something or say something, you either told him to get off of you listened to what he had to say, and he did just fantastic things to incorporate a lot of other young people in his music," he says.
A service to celebrate the life of Toko Pompey will be held at Mangatangi Marae at 11 on Monday morning.
