Shortland takes on deputy chief coroner role

Northland coroner Brandt Shortland of Ngati Hine has been appointed to the newly created position of Deputy Chief Coroner.
He says a key role will be helping chief coroner Judge Deborah Marshall look after the needs of the various stakeholders in the system, including coroners, pathologists, funeral directors, hospitals, and bereaved whanau.
Coroners are qualified lawyers appointed as judicial officers to look into unexpected, violent or suspicious deaths, establish what happened, and where appropriate make recommendations on how similar deaths could be prevented.
Mr Brandt says he has had great support as a coroner from his Ngati Hine and Ngapuhi people.
