Digital trailblazer on Maori Television board
Kaitaia-based broadcaster Peter Lucas Jones has been appointed to the board of Maori Television by the service’s electoral college, Te Putahi Paho.
He replaces Waihoroi Shortland, who now chairs the Maori language strategy body Te Matawai.
Maori Television chair Georgina te Heuheu says as manager of Te Hiku Media, Mr Jones has become an expert in the development of digital media platforms.
He has also shown a strong understanding of the needs of the youth and Māori language speaking audiences.
The next three years will be particularly important as Māori Television embeds its multi-platform and audience growth strategies.
“Maori Television has a key role to play in promoting and protecting te reo Māori and culture and this is best achieved through the transmission of entertaining and engaging content delivered across multiple platforms,” Mrs te Heuheu says.
Mr Jones, who has tribal affiliations to Ngati Kahu, Te Rarawa, Ngai Takoto and Te Aupouri, helped negotiate Te Aupouri’s treaty settlement.
He served a term on the board of the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa.
Te Hiku Media has set the pace for adopting new digital content techniques, including live streaming video of Waitangi Day commemorations and other major hui in Te Taitokerau.
