The crown has accepted the Maniapoto Maori Trust Board’s mandate to negotiate a treaty settlement for the King Country iwi.
The board sought the mandate after another body drawn from claimants going through the Waitangi Tribunal process failed to win enough support from iwi members.
Board chair Tiwha Bell says potential negotiators have until noon tomorrow to apply, and the successful trio should be announced next week.
He says what’s paramount is the unity of the tribe throughout the process.
