Rahui after Kaipara fishing tragedy

Ngati Whatua ki Kaipara has declared a rahui over taking seafood in the harbour in respect for those killed when a chartered fishing boat overturned coming back into the harbour on Saturday.
Just three of the 11 people on board the Francie survived, and seven bodies have been recovered so far.
Ngati Whatua chairperson Haahi Walker says iwi members were at a wananga at Puatahi Marae opposite the harbour entrance when the 12 metre steel fishing boat capsized.
He says they immediately said karakia facing the water.
"We also pleaded to our people, in respect for those who lost their lives, to throw a ban over the whole of the Kaipara, a rahui on taking any seafood. At some time we will have a blessing in various parts of the Kaipara," Mr Walker says.
