Glittering night for Maori Sports Awards
World beaters and inspirational athletes in a huge range of codes and disciplines were celebrated at the 26th Maori Sports Awards in Tamaki Makaurau on Saturday night.
The fact some of the biggest victories over the past year came on the water was acknowledged in the Waka Ama Elite Men’s 500m crew winning the team of the year award, and Kiwi Campbell, who coached the winning Aotearoa women’s teams in the world waka ama championships, taking away the coaching award.
Olympic canoe gold medalist Lisa Carrington was named Maori sportswoman of the year.
Awards convenor Dick Garrett says it was a great night for all.
"Along with Lisa there were all the glittering array from Olympians, world champions, international champions in all their different sports, so an amazing amount of talent out there," he says.
