Outsider Sam Taare’s vision celebrated
The unique vision of the late Ngati Porou artist Sam Taare is one of the centrepieces of an Outsider Art Fair in Tamaki Makaurau.
Thirty of the former freezing worker’s brightly-coloured paintings are on display at the Gus Fisher gallery in Shortland St.
Curator Martin Page says Mr Taare took some correspondence courses early on but pressure of work and family meant he could not pursue his art full time until he retired to Rangitukia.
Like many outsider artists, he made up for lack of technical proficiency with passion.
"Sam’s very much like that. He had a unique style, a freedom in the way he approached painting. He allowed himself to do whatever he felt like doing and subsequently there is a gentle energy attached to his work and a unique perspective on the world that he lived in," Mr Page says.
The Outsider Art Fair closes with a wrap party at Studio One on Ponsonby Road on Saturday evening, but Welcome to My World: The Art of Sam Taare remains on at the Gus Fisher Gallery until December 17.
