Maui example to make a difference

The author of a new book on Maui says the demigod has lessons that apply to Maori today.
Sun Catcher by Tim Tipene with illustrations by Zak Waipara is a modern take on the classic story of Maui catching the sun.
Mr Tipene says he drew out the heroic aspects of the Maui stories, rather than just seeing him as a trickster.
"What I want to do is encourage our youth through these stories. I want to bring Maui back and let people know it is relevant to today and we all need to be standing up. I want to encourage our youth to catch the sun and live like Maui, to use their voice, to stand up make a difference," he says.
Sun Catcher is published by Oratia Press and it’s the first book in the international children's series Indigenous Voices.
