New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says Donald Trump’s win in the American presidential election is a sign people are fed up with the political establishment.

New Zealand’s most successful populist politician says he picked the win when everyone else was writing off the real estate mogul.

He says American politics has been damaged by the refusal of the Washington establishment to listen to ordinary people, with a majority thinking the system is rigged.

"And then you’ve got so many people in America, what you might call heart and soul backbone of the country, you see them in our country as well, who feel no one is listening to them and they don't hear the critical three words they want to hear, 'we hear you,' from Washington itself. You don't have 42,000 lobbyists down in Washington involved in the political system because they want to help the ordinary American people, so the system is rather seriously distorted, it's rather crooked, it's rather bent," Mr Peters says.
