Taipari confirmed chair of Auckland Maori board
David Taipari from Marutuahu has been voted chair of Auckland’s Independent Maori Statutory Board for a third three-year term.
Glenn Wilcox from Ngati Whatua was elected deputy chair at the new board’s first meeting yesterday.
Mr Taipari says he is pleased to be able to continue to lead the board in promoting issues of significance for Mana Whenua and mataawaka of Tamaki Makaurau and trying to ensure Auckland Council acts in accordance with Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Mr Taipari developed a close working relationship with former mayor Len Brown, which he would hope to replicate with new mayor Phil Goff.
On November 15 the board will report on what progress has been made towards the outcomes the board set out in its 2012 Maori Plan.
Mr Taipari says while Maori are achieving success in a number of economic, cultural, social and environmental indicators, there are areas identified in the report where council, central government and Auckland need to focus more resources.
This term the board will have an added focus on research and advocacy on educational achievement and the future earning potential of today’s young people.
