The Maori Party is putting its hopes on former rugby league international Howie Tamati to win back Te Tai Hauauru.

Mr Tamati, of Ngati Mutunga, Te Atiawa and Ngai Tahu, won the nomination on Saturday in a contest with Ngati Ruanui Kaiarataki, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer.

Party president Tukoroirangi Morgan says he has the reach needed to win the seat, as even Maori people who don’t vote, know him.

Mr Tamati is chief executive of Sport Taranaki.

He is also a trustee of Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust, Te Runanga o Ngati Mutunga and New Plymouth’s Te Ana Youth Trust, and he has just finished his fourth term as a New Plymouth district councilor.

Married to Aroaro for 29 years, he is father of seven children and grandfather of five.

The seat is held by Labour’s Adrian Rurawhe.
