Chathams iwi get housing putea

$2 million may get you a couple of houses in Auckland, but the Government hopes the sum will go a lot further on the Chatham Islands.
It’s putting $2 million into the Chatham Islands Housing Partnership Trust, which brings together Ngati Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust, Hokotehi Moriori Trust, Chatham Islands Enterprise Trust and the Chatham Islands Council.
Maori Development and Whanau Ora Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says the trust will assist whanau in need of housing support.
The Government is looking at giving the trust a further $500,000 for emergency housing.
Mr Flavell says the funding fulfils a 2014 Government promise to improve housing on the Chatham Islands and was made possible by the work of his predecessor and the former Associate Minister for Housing, Dame Tariana Turia.
