Turia decries prison spend-up

Maori Party co-founder Dame Tariana Turia says the Government’s decision to spend more on locking people up shows it has lost its focus on social investment.
She says ministers need to look at the gains achieved by Scandanavian countries, who have achieved far lower incarceration and crime rates by seeing prison as being about rehabilitation rather than a breeding ground for future criminals.
Dame Tariana says she was saddened to hear Finance Minister Bill English confirm spending on prison capacity means less can be spent on other options.
That’s while a third of New Zealand children live below the poverty line and people seem to have become immune to the hazardous markers of poverty, such as cold, damp, over-crowded houses, food poverty or uncertainty, poor health, and unstable employment
