20th Anniversary – 2016
MEDIA RELEASE
The 20th Anniversary of Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga Mō Ngā Kura Tuarua o Tāmaki Makaurau will be held this Saturday 15 October 2016 at Te Kura Māori o Ngā Tapuwae, 253 Buckland Road, Māngere.
The Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga Festival began in 1996 following meetings held by the Te Reo Māori Teachers in Tāmaki rohe.
The primary purpose of the contest then was to keep the autonomy of Kapa Haka Festivals with schools, where communities could still be
involved in running them, and for Māori to participate in kapa haka as Māori do. The first competition was hosted by Te Reo Rua o Ngā Tapuwae, known today as Te Kura Māori o Ngā Tapuwae.
The schools that performed at the inaugural Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga Competition in
1996 were:
· Te Reo Rua o Ngā Tapuwae
Pakuranga/De La Salle Colleges
· Western Springs College
· James Cook High School
· Selwyn College
· Queen Victoria & St Stephens Schools
· Edgewater College
· Ōtāhuhu College
· Rosehill College
· Waitakere College
· Mt Roskill Grammar
Since then the competition has grown into an annual celebration where people of all ages can appreciate Māori culture, kai and kapa haka in a unique whānau-orientated way.
Every second year, schools compete to qualify for the National Secondary School Kapa Haka competition.
This year is a non-qualifying event for nationals.
The pōwhiri is being held on Friday 14 October, 12pm at the Ngā Tapuwae Community Centre, where the festival’s taonga will be returned to the competition and tutors, performers and supporters will be officially welcomed.
On competition day, the gates open to the public at 7:30am with karakia at 8am at the stage.
The first performance will take place at 8:05am. Entry costs are Adults $4, Children $3, Family Pass $10 (4 people max. 2 adults)
As well as the competition, Te Kura Māori o Ngā Tapuwae’s Parent Entity, Te Huarahi Hou,have organised tamariki rides and kai stalls for whānau coming to support the kaupapa.
